Job Description:
Axcis are working with a secondary school in Sutton and are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated teaching assistant to support a non-verbal student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This role requires working closely with the student to help facilitate their learning, development, and integration into the classroom environment. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children with ASD and a strong understanding of alternative communication methods, such as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) Or Makaton.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide individualised support to the student during academic lessons, helping to maintain focus and engage with educational materials. Assist in modifying lessons to suit the student's unique learning needs.
• Monitor and support the student’s behaviour, implementing individualised behaviour management strategies in collaboration with the special education team to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.
• Assist the student in using alternative communication tools (e.g., PECS, gestures, sign language) to communicate needs and desires. Encourage and support the development of communication skills.
• Help the student develop social and emotional skills by guiding appropriate social interactions with peers and assisting in managing emotions in both structured and unstructured settings.
• Supporting their interactions with other students and ensuring they are actively participating in all aspects of classroom life.
• Support the student in developing independence in daily activities, such as self-care, hygiene, and transitioning between activities.
Requirements:
• Prior experience working with children with autism, particularly non-verbal students, is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of communication support strategies, such as PECS or Makaton
• Experience in behavioural intervention and support.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to remain patient, calm, and flexible in various situations.
• Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate effectively with teachers, staff, and parents.
• Understanding of diverse learning styles and the ability to tailor approaches to meet individual student needs.
