Axcis are working with an SEMH day school in North Devon, who is looking for specialised SEMH teaching assistants working at the primary site. The children have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as such it is imperative you have SEMH or challenging behaviour experience. You will be required on a full time basis working Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 3:45. Pay rates range from £70-£85 per day depending on experience. The school is based in a rural area of North Devon surrounded by countryside so a car driver is essential.
The school is rated 'Good' by Ofsted and offers a wonderful array of resources. The school partners up with an activity group in the area and often give the children outdoor education through challenging activities, to build on their confidence and independence. The school also have therapy dogs that live on site helping the children's emotional wellbeing. The children that attend the school have been out of education at some point in their lives and need an adaptive curriculum to meet their EHCP's.
The ideal candidate must have experience working with children with SEMH that display challenging behaviour. The pupils that go to the school have either been in the care system or experienced trauma in their lives and have little or no trust in adults. Some have challenging behaviour due to their backgrounds or are delicate and need to build confidence, self esteem or resilience as well as social interaction.
Your role as a mentor is to work 1-1 with a primary KS2 child giving them a trusting relationship, assisting with their social development, class learning and providing them the ability to manage their feelings. The young people are behind peers in terms of social life and independence skills. This is a highly rewarding job being a role model and changing a child's life.
Axcis specialise in Special Educational Needs and are the chosen suppliers for NASEN a renowned charitable membership organisation that support those working with and for children with SEND and Learning differences.
