Job Title: Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant
Role: Axcis Education are seeking an energetic, resilient, and resourceful Teaching Assistant to work at a mainstream primary school in Exeter. Your role will be 1-1 special educational needs teaching assistant, supporting a pupil diagnosed with autism. The pupil also has communication needs with little speech and presents below their age. Hours and Pay: This job role is working Monday to Friday from 8:30 – 3:30 with a 30-minute break. You will be paid a daily rate from £85 - £95, every Friday, one week in arrears. The school is accessible by local transport and has a car park on site for all staff. This is a temporary role initially, for the right candidate who shows progress with the pupil this can be a long-term to permanent role. Responsibilities: As a 1-1 SEND TA your main goal is to integrate the child back into the classroom with their teacher and peers. The child usually works in a space outside the classroom, playground, library, or sensory room. You will be completing activities throughout the day, including sensory based play, phonics, numeracy, writing, reading and lots of messy play, arts and crafts. The child can dysregulate when frustrated or if they do not get their own way. They may also be physical at times; this is not common but may happen whilst the child is getting to know you. You do have staff and teachers who can support you. You will be working alongside the child’s EHCP (Educational Care Plan) which provides you with their goals, achievements, behaviour, speech, and educational levels. Requirements: To be successful in this role you must be someone who has experience working with autistic children or adults either professionally, voluntarily, or personally. You must understand how to manage behaviour and remain resilient whilst being calm when the child is dysregulated. You need to be confident in building trusting relationships and common grounds with children. As a 1-1 TA you can sometimes feel isolated, as you are mainly working on your own with the child. You must be someone who can use their initiative, be a good role-model and be playful.
