Job Summary:
Axcis is working with a secondary school in Croydon, looking for a Science Teacher to work within a PRU. The Teaching Assistant (TA) in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) plays a vital role in supporting pupils who may have been excluded from mainstream education due to behavioural, emotional, or social challenges. The role involves providing tailored educational support, helping to manage behaviour, and ensuring that each pupil has access to a safe and positive learning environment. The role also requires a nurturing and flexible approach to meet the individual needs of students in a PRU setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the delivery of the curriculum for students with complex emotional and behavioural needs, helping them to access learning effectively.
Provide one-on-one support or small group support for students, both inside and outside the classroom.
Help students to develop social and emotional skills, encouraging positive behaviour and building self-confidence.
Support students with special educational needs (SEN), providing tailored support as required by their individual education plans (IEPs).
Support the management of student behaviour using strategies and techniques that are consistent with the PRU’s behavioural policies.
Assist in de-escalating situations where pupils may be displaying challenging behaviour.
Promote a calm and respectful atmosphere by setting clear expectations and boundaries for behaviour.
Work collaboratively with other staff to implement and monitor behaviour management plans.
Monitoring and Assessment:
Observe and record pupils' progress, including behavioural and academic development, and share information with teachers and senior staff.
Assist in assessing the needs of pupils and providing feedback to help adjust teaching strategies and learning goals.
Contribute to the creation of progress reports and reviews for individual pupils.
Provide feedback to students in a constructive manner, encouraging their development and progress.
Support the classroom teacher in the preparation and organisation of learning materials, resources, and equipment.
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and stimulating classroom environment.
Help pupils with tasks such as reading, writing, and other educational activities.
Encourage active participation and engagement in lessons, ensuring students remain on task.
Build positive and trusting relationships with students, offering pastoral care and emotional support when required.
Promote the inclusion of all students, encouraging a sense of belonging and self-worth.
Support students during break and lunchtime, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Requirements:
Experience of working with children or young people, particularly those with challenging behaviour, is highly desirable.
Experience in a PRU, alternative provision, or similar setting would be an advantage.
Experience supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) is desirable.
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with students, teachers, and other professionals.
Ability to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour in a calm and effective manner.
Good organisational skills and the ability to adapt to the varied needs of students.
Patience, empathy, and resilience in working with vulnerable students.
Understanding of safeguarding procedures and a commitment to child protection.
