Job Title: Teaching Assistant – Special School for Children with Complex Needs Location: Plymouth Hours: Full-time, Term Time Only Axcis are working with a specialist school catering to children and young people with complex needs, including severe learning difficulties and associated challenges. Many of of their learners have complex communication and interaction needs, including those linked to Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Condition, physical disabilities, and/or complex medical conditions. All of their pupils have an Education, Health, and Care Plan. The school are dedicated to providing a supportive, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every learner is encouraged to reach their full potential. The Role We are seeking a passionate and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their committed team. You will play a vital role in supporting learners with their education, personal development, and wellbeing. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with complex needs. Responsibilities • Support pupils in the classroom under the direction of the class teacher. • Work 1:1 or in small groups to deliver tailored support for individual learning needs. • Use specialist communication methods, such as Makaton or PECS, where required. • Assist with personal care, including toileting and feeding, where necessary. • Provide physical support for pupils with mobility challenges or physical disabilities. • Help manage challenging behaviours using positive reinforcement techniques. • Foster a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment. • Support the implementation of EHCP goals and contribute to progress tracking. About You The ideal candidate will have: • A passion for working with children and young people with complex needs. • Previous experience as a teaching assistant or in a care/support role (desirable but not essential). • Knowledge or experience with SEND, including Autism, Down Syndrome, or physical disabilities. • An understanding of specialist communication methods (Makaton, PECS, etc.) or a willingness to learn. • Patience, resilience, and a nurturing approach to behaviour management. • Excellent teamwork and communication skills. • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
